Random Thought #4 My notebook, Week at the countryside, Life event update.

My notebook

I’ve owned a Dell Vostro 5470 for around 3 years now, I decided to buy it for two reasons, the first one and most important one is that I needed a tool for study and possibly work, the second reason is that I wanted to play games with it; purchasing this model in specific was probably one of the worst purchases I’ve ever made.

It can’t be that bad…

Considering I had to request for technical support 3 times and only one of those was truly my fault, it was REALLY bad, once I unboxed the device and proceed to turn it on I couldn’t help but notice it already had a problem, a dead pixel, but it really didn’t bother me because it could be “fixed” as it would become invisible depending on the angle.

The first real trouble arrived a couple of weeks later, my mother borrowed my notebook to access her bank, she installed a bank software that for some reason made the computer perform much slower then usual, after many failed attempts of killing the software I decided to the most “logical” thing there was, formatting the computer, Pro tip never format a computer when you have no fucking clue what you’re doing, I ended up accidently corrupting my Windows installation, and since the notebook didn’t came with a software repair USB device I had to call Dell’s technicians, the technician handed me the device I needed and taught me how to use it, after this hellish I never downloaded a bank software on my computer again.

Problem number two arrived a year later, due to a poor connection between the motherboard and the monitor, the screen started to flicker often and all of the colors it would display turned into a shade of red, a guy came fixed it and I thought it was all fine and peachy until it happened again, on the same week, but now instead of the colors being a shade of red they were all a shade of green, fucking ace…

So now comes my current problem, the charger plug inside the notebook is busted and won’t charge it unless it is on a specific position, not to mention the screen flickering came back AFTER the warranty expired, goddammit, so what did we learn today kids?

Don’t buy this hunk of junk? Take better care of your stuff? Be smarter when you buy something you plan to game on?

Yes, yes and yes, to my defense back then I had no idea how to properly build a computer and basically thought any GPU would be enough to run any game, man was I stupid…

Week at the countryside

I just wanted to say how much I love staying at the countryside with my family, it’s been a while since the last time I spent a week there, it was all very relaxing, while yes I’m more fond of the urban lifestyle rather than the rural one, I must admit a change of pace is something perfect from time to time, for instance, normally my entertainment would consist of things related to the internet, but there, I could play a board game with my cousins and great aunt, stare into the stars, have a long conversation about random stuff, walk to a nearby waterfall, replay Scott Pilgrim vs. The World on your cousins PS3 and wish the game was rereleased, go to the nearby city and drink milkshakes and so on.

While some of the things I’ve mentioned aren’t urban exclusive it’s something very different than what I’m used to, I’m always glad to see their excitement seeing me, someone who is barely present in their lives due to the lack of opportunity, so guys, I don’t know if you read my blog or not, but I want to thank you for everything, I hope we get to see each other more often because I love spending every second of my day with y’all!

Life event update

Turns out I gave the wrong date of when it’ll happen and when it’ll end, sorry folks who care and/or are curious about what’s going to happen, the big event will happen on September 9th and it’ll end on November 15th, I have almost everything prepared for it, I haven’t been this excited about something in quite a while, so it better be as amazing as I wish it was, I hope time flies so it can start faster and that it’ll slow down as soon as it does, anyway that’s enough news for today, hope you enjoyed the usual random non-sense, See ya!

Enrico Sposato vs. The Brazilian Army (A.K.A. The Fall and Rebirth of my Hair)

Have you ever looked at something and thought to yourself “Man I really did made the right choice”? Recently I’ve been looking at myself and thinking this exact thing, my hair has been growing probably since September, I wanted to let it grow for quite some time now but sadly couldn’t do it because I had “military duties” I had to attend.
So on today’s post I’ll talk about my army enlisting experience and the story of the fall and rebirth of my hair.

Enlisting in the army isn’t a military duty Enrico, what are you talking about?

Well my dear non-Brazilian reader, here in Brazil it’s mandatory for every Brazilian men to enlist in either the national army, the navy or air force on the year of their 18th birthday, If you don’t there are a few consequences attached to it, like not being able to get a passport, In most cases people who don’t want to join the one of those divisions are discharged on their first interview, I had to cut my hair and shave so that my forehead, neck and chin are visible, and I really, REALLY hate having short hair.

What’s so bad about having short hair? It’s such a popular hair style with guys nowadays.

I don’t have anything against short hair, I know people that look great with it, but here’s the thing, I don’t feel comfortable with it and I definitely don’t look good with it, especially when combined with a clean shave, it feels weird, people who wear glasses regularly may relate to this, it’s kinda like when you take your glasses off and you,or someone, thinks you look a bit off without them, I feel exactly how I feel having short hair.

I still remember the initial reactions towards my haircut, my girlfriend at the time did her best to cheer me up even though we both didn’t liked the way it looked, one of my friends took a few minutes to find me in the school’s hall even though I was sitting really close to him and my other friends were a bit shocked by the difference.

I wasn’t discharged on the first interview, months passed and they kept pushing me towards the other phases until I ended up on the selection phase, I was getting a bit worried, most of my friends were discharged already and my other friend, who actually wanted to join the army, told me that it was going to be pretty though, without other options I had another haircut as I waited for my fate to be revealed.

The day was dark and it was drizzling outside, I was afraid of the unknown,
thankfully my experience in there was quite pleasant, I only saw one case of soldiers being rough to a guy but it was because he failed to follow orders without complaining.

The soldiers were friendly towards me, only instructing me on where to go and explaining how the process would work, when it came to the selection itself I got discharged during the medical exam, they asked me if I had any sort of handicap, though I wasn’t sure if it would be considered one or not, I told them about surgery I’ve had in both hands and showed it to them, after a few looks they asked me if I wanted to join the army, I said no, after that they lead me through the steps of being discharged, on the outside I was emotionless, but on the inside I was filled with joy.

I went to the stadium that they asked me to go and was assigned a line to wait on, after what I think it was an hour we entered the stadium and sat down, we only had to sing the national anthem and make a vow that we would always protect our country and never betray it, the usual pleadging alliance stuff you expect.

After all that was done, I made a promise to myself, I promised the next time I went to a barbershop I would only shorten my bangs, the year passed, I graduated from high school, my girlfriend broke up with me and I was down emotionally for probably 2 months until I’ve recovered it, the special event I keep mentioning over and over was just an idea brewing on my mind, I was still at the process of getting my drivers licence while still letting my hair grow.

It was probably on may that I finally went to the barber, my bangs were already covering my eyes and it was really annoying to live with, after I think it was the first time in many, MANY years that I was actually happy about the final result.

Currently my hair is slightly short on the front and while the back and top are full of hair, before this I think I’ve only heard a single compliment about my hair, but now I got lots of it, people really liked the way it looks now, but what’s more important, I like the way it is.

It was quite a journey to finally get the hair I’ve always wanted, it really sucks that military service is mandatory in Brazil, it will probably stay this way for a while now, still, I’m glad it’s over now.

Was it worth going through all that and finally let my hair grow?

Good question, and I shall answer it in two parts.

Was it worth going through the whole enlisting process? Well it’s mandatory here so I didn’t have much of a choice on the matter, if it wasn’t mandatory I definitely wouldn’t bother going through all this, but since I was discharged I won’t complain.

Was it worth making this change? Absolutely, my change definitely wasn’t a common one, usually when you hear people making changes to their hair they usually mean dyeing it,let their natural curly hair grow, shaving it and so on, I wasn’t sure if mine was worth mentioning, I was afraid people may think the post is boring, but I did it anyway…

Why is that?

Because I know there’s someone out there who wants to make a change to their life and may be afraid of it due to some challenges in their path, whether it is because their parents are opposed to the idea, being afraid of the reaction others will have to it, a military obligation similar to my case, or some other thing, before going through this change one thing must be on your mind, the final result. Is this change going to be healthy for your life? Do you think this change will make you happier? If both answers are yes, you should definitely give it a try, maybe your new look will grow on people similar to what happened with me, maybe it won’t, what truly matters is that you’re happy with it.

My dreams can be compared to a cartoon or a tv series with no inter-arching plot and completely different genres of episodes throughout its run, from ones I’m flying by doing a front crawl swimming motion, to running away from a demonic Barney the Dinosaur and killing it with a shotgun.

This post will be about 5 strange reoccurring things that happens in my unconscious mind.

1. Tasting dream food.

I don’t remember how many times this happened before, but I’m sure it was more than once, I can recall what probably was the first time this happened to me, I was a little kid I had a dream that I was on the back of my mom’s car with her and my grandma, she went on a McDonald’s and got me some Chicken McNuggets, I have no clue why I was able to taste it, and even less of a clue on why they ordered Chicken McNuggets considering I liked their french fries better at that age.

I think the same thing might have happened a few years ago when I dreamed about eating some pepperoni pizza, and woke up craving for some, which kinda sucks because pepperoni pizza is probably on of the most expensive flavors in our local pizzerias.

2. Weird ways of waking up.

Sometimes my dreams have an ending scene, even rarer are the endings that I wake myself up

I remember waking up on many different ways over the years, I already slapped myself awake from a nightmare, screamed at my brain to wake me up, running and jumping on my bed and merging with another version of me that’s sleeping in it, zooming out of the scene, slowly waking up by the alarm clock music intruding my dream, crying myself awake, killing whatever monster my brain put me against this dream, so on.

3. The dream within a dream.

You remember when you have the wonderful dream and someone or something woke you up? It sucks right? what’s going to happen in the love story that your dream set you up? what was that one character going to say to you before you woke up?

What if you could go back to sleep and dream about the ending of that story? what if you never woke up? Yes you never woke up, your brain just put you in a dream where you woke up from another dream, how cool is that? not at all? yeah I agree with you.

Oddly enough the Chicken McNugget dream was a dream within a dream, other cases usually involve me waking up but I see myself in third person and I don’t realize I’m in a dream until I wake up for good.

4. Dream’s locations

This one is, rather weird, when I’m sleeping at someone’s house there’s a huge chance that good portion of my dream would take place in that house.

When I was studying, i used to dream a lot about vacations and just simply being outside of school, while when I was on my summer vacation I had dreams that mostly took place in one of the many classrooms I’ve studied over the years.

Sometimes my dream can be kinda like the Black Ops III zombie maps Revelations, because there are so many unrelated locations linked together by a strange reason.

5. Lucid Dreams

Being in control of your dreams is something rather rare, but fun to do once you realize you’re actually dreaming.

I once read that sometimes you’ll look different in your dream so try to look out for a defining feature everytime, usually for me it works the best when I look at my hand, in real life i have scars in both of them, so often when I’m dreaming, there will be no scars.

But even though I’m in control sometimes things aren’t as awesome as they can be, no no no, sometimes instead of just ending my suffering from a nightmare I try to defeat whatever haunts it with my new found powers, sometimes you’ll defeat it, other times you won’t be able to scratch it because the creature is too powerful.

I remember one time being “stucked” on a lucid dream, you know you’re there, you’re in a bad situation you try to get out and nothing works, you try to get an escape to a better realm in your subconscious world, try to get a weapon to defeat what torments, but whatever you do nothing works.

Kinda odd that most of my lucid dreams are nightmares, but at least is nice to take control of it every now and agaim and save yourself from trouble.

In conclusion:

Our brains can be pretty fucked up when it comes to dreams, they can give us something fun, something sexy, something messed up, something completely nonsensical, these things being based on the things you love, the things you fear and the things your brain said it should happen like:

“Wouldn’t it be funny if you were scare you by waking you up in your house but instead of your family you saw people with purple sandwiches for a head? Because that’s what’s going to happen!” Enrico’s brain on what was probably his first nightmare ever.

Most of the dreams and nightmares i mentioned in this post were real, although in real life i wouldn’t be afraid of the source material, they somehow ended up being terrifying when I went to bed…

Sweet dreams!

Random Thoughts #2 Voice actors, my first console and the reason I don’t use Facebook as much as I did before

Recognizing Voice Actors.

Really, recognizing voice actors?

Yes, recognizing voice actors, I don’t know why but I find a bit of joy when I can compare character’s voices to later find out that they share the same voice actor. Two examples on this:

On the Adventure Time episode “Everything’s Jake” there are 3 characters that Jake meets throughout the story, Goose, The Mayor and Dr. Erik Adamkinson, that sound pretty similar to Phillip J. Fry, Zapp Brannigan and Professor Farmsworth from Futurama, that’s because they were all voice by the same person, Billy West, which I think is pretty cool considering that Bender and Jake are both voiced by John DiMaggio.

Nolan North and Steve Blum worked together innumerous times, they’ve had very iconic roles over the years and are two of my favorites voice actors, If I had to pick 2 franchises they’ve worked together and their characters in them, I’d pick Call of Duty Zombies’ Dr. Edward Richtofen and Tank Dempsey.

The first video game console I’ve ever owned.

I can’t remember what year I got it as a Christmas gift, but the console I got was a Gemini X Game, a Brazilian Famicom Clone, it looked like a Sony Discman with Sega Genesis/Mega Drive inspired controllers, a Famicom cartridge slot and strangely enough, a light gun that kinda looks like a Walther PPK, James Bond’s weapon of choice.

Little me was too dumb to understand that this console was a clone, but even if I did, I wouldn’t care, It was my first console, I was very excited to play it and I had a lot of fun doing so.

I can’t remember all of the games that were available on the cartridges and the system, so with the help of Google I found out some of the games I’ve played on it: Track & Field, Duck Hunt, F-1 Race, Lunar Pool, Hogan’s Alley, Contra, Jackal, Soccer, Spider-Man Return of the Sinister Six, Battle City.

The reason I’m avoiding Facebook recently.

Brazil is a country that is very divided when it comes to politics, some people lean more to the left while others lean more to the right, that’s natural people do have different opinions on different things, I will respect both sides of the coin regardless.

Talking about politics is important so you can grow up as a person and help the society you live do so as well, as long as your political view isn’t your only personality trait everything should be fine, which leads me to why I’m avoiding Facebook, political posts.

Sharing something on Facebook is kinda like a one way conversation, you just press a button to display something on your timeline and show it to other people in their News Feed, and that’s about it, unless you’re a famous person or a page you won’t get a lot of attention, apply that to politics and things will get a bit annoying.

You’re saying this because you don’t agree with their opinion…

Not really, sometimes I may agree with their point of view, my problem is the fact that Facebook doesn’t have a filter to simply block the kinds of post you don’t want to see on your News Feed , I’d rather just see what my friends are up to instead of blocking every page that posts political content because of something my friends shared.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to “throw shit” on my friends because of their point of view, you can post whatever you want on your timeline, If I don’t want to see certain content is my problem not yours, Facebook could at least help it’s users to block specific subjects they would rather not see, if you’re somehow insulted because of this post I’m sorry.

Anyway that wraps things up for today, I’ve made a possible thumbnail for future Random Thoughts, it’s probably not the final version though.

A “dead” game’s last breath?

Hey guys, I wanted to make this post for a while now, because it’s actually something that I have a lot of passion for, a game that I really enjoyed for a while and wish I could play it again, you can even consider it an honorable mention on the 5 game that are very  special to me,  I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way about it, but anyway the game I’m talking about is Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game.

Why do I want this game to make a comeback? There are only two, but I made sure to pack them full of info, and they are:

1. The series author wants to bring it back.

Author Bryan Lee O’ Malley, creator of Lost at the Sea, Seconds, and of course Scott Pilgrim, mentioned once in his Twitter that he would do whatever was at his power to bring the game back, but he needs time, meaning that he, along with the fans, really want this game to make a come back.

I would suggest my readers to not bother Mr. O’ Malley on the matter, the guy only created the graphical novels, not the game nor the movie, he did have a close involvement with their creation, he’s doing what he can regarding the re-release.

2. The game itself

Man, talk about a fun game, I believe besides some flash game I’ve played on the internet when I was young, this was my first arcade style side-scroller beat’em up, the game is beautiful, the sprites were inspired by the graphic novels, made by Paul Robertson, who  later on made the sprites for Mercenary Kings;
Music wise, we have to thank Anamanaguchi for the amazing soundtrack, I occasionally catch myself listening to Another Winter and Rock Club, in fact I’m currently listening Another Winter.

Going around Toronto with Scott, Ramona, Stephen and Kim (also Wallace and Knives if you bought their DLC or the Ultimate Edition) beating up some guys and gals contracted by the League of Evil Exes, only to defeat one of the 7 Evil Exes at the end of stage, each character has their own attacks and special moves, from Ramona pulling a random weapon out of her Subspace Suitcase to Kim sneezing a fireball like projectile, the game had a fun combat system, I’ve never had the experience of playing this game with an arcade stick but I can imagine how good it must be, each character has it’s unique ending to the game, giving the game some re-play value, while I unfortunately haven’t gotten a chance to play this game with 4 people, neither through online nor through guests, but I can imagine playing this with friends would be very fun.

The game was filled with references to the graphical novels, the movie, gaming and even to places in Toronto, references such as:
Being able to pay Scott’s Late Fees for $540.25, on Volume 5 of the books after defeating the twins Scott earns an achievement for defeating them simultaneously and the game contains an achievement/ trophy with this exact description.
Mario styled blocks in a Rainbow Road inspired Subspace Highway,  in-game stores with a similar looking layout to those found in River City Ransom, items named as Speedy the Porcupine, Never-ending Fantasy, Energy Tank that are references to Sonic the Hedgehog, Final Fantasy and the Mega Man energy tanks.
In level one you will find two stores, one named Delicious Cup and the other Dee’s Tex-Mex; they are a reference to Second Cup Coffee Co. and Sneaky Dee’s Tex-Mex restaurant.

It is unfortunate that the game was only available through the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live’s store, It was quite a successful game among those who played it prior to it’s de-listing at the end of 2014.

Is there still hope for the game? In my opinion that is a yes, look at Deadpool, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, the Telltale Back to the Future, Bayonetta on PC and among other games,  Deadpool and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 were taken off from both online services but made a comeback on PS4, Xbox One and on PC, a place that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 hasn’t been released; the Back to the Future game has been re-released on PS4 and Xbox One to celebrate Back to the Future day and on Bayonetta’s case, I believe they re-released it because the fans demanded for it.

If I had to point a finger towards who could bring this game back from the limbo it’d be either Ubisoft or Universal, In 2013 when spoken on the topic of releasing the game on PC, one of the Mercenary King’s developer mentioned that it’d only be possible if Ubisoft were up to it, and Universal because Mr. O’Malley mentioned that the game was a movie tie-in and that neither of them made a lot of money.

Will we ever see the game again? Only time will tell us what answers await us, let’s just hope they bring this game back to current-gen consoles and for the PC.

My opinion on Soccer/Football

He’s a Brazilian of course he likes soccer/football!

Actually, no, I don’t like soccer/football at all…

Still bitter about the World Cup?

I’ve never been, most other Brazilians were pretty upset about it, I laughed so much that day, I was playing Black Ops II while my family was busy watching the match at the living room, even while wearing headphones and with the door closed you could still hear the game and people screaming at the window, I remember I lost it when I heard someone yelling “BAD TEAM” of course it was in Portuguese.

Ok so when exactly did you started disliking the sport?

To be honest, I don’t have a specific date to mark on the calendar, I remember having to play it so many times over the years just to complete a team, and suck at it, while everyone else was having fun or taking it more to a competitive side, I was rather bored.
Soccer/football is something unavoidable here, everywhere you go you’ll hear people talking about last night’s game, how amazing that one player is, how superior [Insert team name here] is and how awful [Insert team name here] is, and so on.

I live on an apartment complex, so wanting it or not you’ll know when someone scores on the game, the reason being the noise, you’ll hear people screaming “GO [Insert team name here]” SUCK IT [Insert team name here]”, using air horns, vuvuzelas, cars horns and whatever they can use. While I’m not sure everywhere in the country is like this, I wouldn’t doubt it considering how big of a thing it is around here.

Video game wise, I’m not sure why FIFA and PES are still being released yearly, the only difference between them and their previous version is a bit of a graphical difference, some changes regarding to the team and occasionally a new feature, this argument can be made about any yearly released game like Call of Duty or sports games.

I’ve went to a stadium at least twice in my life, one of them was to watch a match with my cousins, and the other one was to watch a Foo Fighters concert with them,
Can you guess which one I had more fun going to?
If you guessed watching the game you clearly haven’t been reading this in the right order.
I’m not gonna lie, I’ve fun watching the game with them, not because of the actual game, but to the company I was with,  I cheered with them, it’d feel awkward being the only one not to, plus I wanted to make them happy knowing that I was having a good time with them, In the end the team they were rooting for won, hooray, at the end of the night we went to a burger joint to eat something, whether it was a celebratory thing or because we were really hungry, we may never know, or care in fact, on that day I’ve discovered that even if you’re doing something that you’d consider boring, the right company can make that experience really enjoyable.

Is there anything wrong with liking the soccer/football? absolutely not, you can enjoy playing it or watching a match as much as you want, if you’re having fun doing so that’s all the matters, just because we’re into different things that doesn’t mean I won’t respect you as a person.
There’s still one question that bothers me to this day, If I don’t like soccer/football as a sport or as a video game, why the hell do I enjoy Rocket League so much?
