Enrico Sposato vs. The Brazilian Army (A.K.A. The Fall and Rebirth of my Hair)

Have you ever looked at something and thought to yourself “Man I really did made the right choice”? Recently I’ve been looking at myself and thinking this exact thing, my hair has been growing probably since September, I wanted to let it grow for quite some time now but sadly couldn’t do it because I had “military duties” I had to attend.
So on today’s post I’ll talk about my army enlisting experience and the story of the fall and rebirth of my hair.

Enlisting in the army isn’t a military duty Enrico, what are you talking about?

Well my dear non-Brazilian reader, here in Brazil it’s mandatory for every Brazilian men to enlist in either the national army, the navy or air force on the year of their 18th birthday, If you don’t there are a few consequences attached to it, like not being able to get a passport, In most cases people who don’t want to join the one of those divisions are discharged on their first interview, I had to cut my hair and shave so that my forehead, neck and chin are visible, and I really, REALLY hate having short hair.

What’s so bad about having short hair? It’s such a popular hair style with guys nowadays.

I don’t have anything against short hair, I know people that look great with it, but here’s the thing, I don’t feel comfortable with it and I definitely don’t look good with it, especially when combined with a clean shave, it feels weird, people who wear glasses regularly may relate to this, it’s kinda like when you take your glasses off and you,or someone, thinks you look a bit off without them, I feel exactly how I feel having short hair.

I still remember the initial reactions towards my haircut, my girlfriend at the time did her best to cheer me up even though we both didn’t liked the way it looked, one of my friends took a few minutes to find me in the school’s hall even though I was sitting really close to him and my other friends were a bit shocked by the difference.

I wasn’t discharged on the first interview, months passed and they kept pushing me towards the other phases until I ended up on the selection phase, I was getting a bit worried, most of my friends were discharged already and my other friend, who actually wanted to join the army, told me that it was going to be pretty though, without other options I had another haircut as I waited for my fate to be revealed.

The day was dark and it was drizzling outside, I was afraid of the unknown,
thankfully my experience in there was quite pleasant, I only saw one case of soldiers being rough to a guy but it was because he failed to follow orders without complaining.

The soldiers were friendly towards me, only instructing me on where to go and explaining how the process would work, when it came to the selection itself I got discharged during the medical exam, they asked me if I had any sort of handicap, though I wasn’t sure if it would be considered one or not, I told them about surgery I’ve had in both hands and showed it to them, after a few looks they asked me if I wanted to join the army, I said no, after that they lead me through the steps of being discharged, on the outside I was emotionless, but on the inside I was filled with joy.

I went to the stadium that they asked me to go and was assigned a line to wait on, after what I think it was an hour we entered the stadium and sat down, we only had to sing the national anthem and make a vow that we would always protect our country and never betray it, the usual pleadging alliance stuff you expect.

After all that was done, I made a promise to myself, I promised the next time I went to a barbershop I would only shorten my bangs, the year passed, I graduated from high school, my girlfriend broke up with me and I was down emotionally for probably 2 months until I’ve recovered it, the special event I keep mentioning over and over was just an idea brewing on my mind, I was still at the process of getting my drivers licence while still letting my hair grow.

It was probably on may that I finally went to the barber, my bangs were already covering my eyes and it was really annoying to live with, after I think it was the first time in many, MANY years that I was actually happy about the final result.

Currently my hair is slightly short on the front and while the back and top are full of hair, before this I think I’ve only heard a single compliment about my hair, but now I got lots of it, people really liked the way it looks now, but what’s more important, I like the way it is.

It was quite a journey to finally get the hair I’ve always wanted, it really sucks that military service is mandatory in Brazil, it will probably stay this way for a while now, still, I’m glad it’s over now.

Was it worth going through all that and finally let my hair grow?

Good question, and I shall answer it in two parts.

Was it worth going through the whole enlisting process? Well it’s mandatory here so I didn’t have much of a choice on the matter, if it wasn’t mandatory I definitely wouldn’t bother going through all this, but since I was discharged I won’t complain.

Was it worth making this change? Absolutely, my change definitely wasn’t a common one, usually when you hear people making changes to their hair they usually mean dyeing it,let their natural curly hair grow, shaving it and so on, I wasn’t sure if mine was worth mentioning, I was afraid people may think the post is boring, but I did it anyway…

Why is that?

Because I know there’s someone out there who wants to make a change to their life and may be afraid of it due to some challenges in their path, whether it is because their parents are opposed to the idea, being afraid of the reaction others will have to it, a military obligation similar to my case, or some other thing, before going through this change one thing must be on your mind, the final result. Is this change going to be healthy for your life? Do you think this change will make you happier? If both answers are yes, you should definitely give it a try, maybe your new look will grow on people similar to what happened with me, maybe it won’t, what truly matters is that you’re happy with it.

A letter to my future self.

What’s this post all about Enrico?

Just me wanting to get somethings off my chest, it ain’t nothing too silly or too serious either, I just wanted to do something different for a change, but considering this blog is too random I’m not sure if this would be different or something to be expected honestly.

Since I really can’t guide my past self through life, I might ask to my future self what’s up and try to give myself a motivational speech or something similar.

Hello Enrico, it’s me, you, well actually a younger version of yourself but I’m sure you understood that on the first attempt, how are you doing today? hopefully you’re doing fine, I’m doing quite well, I have a driving exam and preparations for August are almost over.

By the time you’re reading this the big event is already a pleasant memory of the past, We both know how excited you were for it, I really hope it as wonderful as you wished it would be, after all you’ve been dreaming about that moment for so many years.

Are you still calling yourself Slayer? If so we can safely say some habits never truly die, they only evolve, whether it’s for the best or for the worst we’re the ones who can truly say so, did you finally built project Dominique? we both know how much you wanted to play on something better than the fucked up Vostro 5470 you’re using right now.

How was college life? what course did you study? Was it the ones you wanted since the beginning or did you decided to study something else? regardless of what you picked, I’m sure you gave your best shot and will nail it, if you’re reading this before you completed it, be strong, I know it’ll be tough but you can do it.

Hopefully your lazy ass start posting more often on the blog, you really wanted to do this but the lack of content really consumed you at times, but i think by now you probably have a lot more to say about your life and stuff.

I wonder how much did we changed from one another, we’ve been always changing after events in our lives, mostly because of the people we’ve met, they can really change our perspective on things, whether it’s a good thing or a bad one it’s up for debate, change is inevitable after all.

Well I don’t really know what else to say to you, because, well, you know I’m more of a listener rather than a speaker, hopefully this changes over time. anyway, don’t let life run you over, greatness awaits us, at least I hope it does, but I’m sure you’ll make the best out of any situation life throws at you, and I truly hope you’re happy wherever you are.

I expect an answer 5 to 10 years from now.

My dreams can be compared to a cartoon or a tv series with no inter-arching plot and completely different genres of episodes throughout its run, from ones I’m flying by doing a front crawl swimming motion, to running away from a demonic Barney the Dinosaur and killing it with a shotgun.

This post will be about 5 strange reoccurring things that happens in my unconscious mind.

1. Tasting dream food.

I don’t remember how many times this happened before, but I’m sure it was more than once, I can recall what probably was the first time this happened to me, I was a little kid I had a dream that I was on the back of my mom’s car with her and my grandma, she went on a McDonald’s and got me some Chicken McNuggets, I have no clue why I was able to taste it, and even less of a clue on why they ordered Chicken McNuggets considering I liked their french fries better at that age.

I think the same thing might have happened a few years ago when I dreamed about eating some pepperoni pizza, and woke up craving for some, which kinda sucks because pepperoni pizza is probably on of the most expensive flavors in our local pizzerias.

2. Weird ways of waking up.

Sometimes my dreams have an ending scene, even rarer are the endings that I wake myself up

I remember waking up on many different ways over the years, I already slapped myself awake from a nightmare, screamed at my brain to wake me up, running and jumping on my bed and merging with another version of me that’s sleeping in it, zooming out of the scene, slowly waking up by the alarm clock music intruding my dream, crying myself awake, killing whatever monster my brain put me against this dream, so on.

3. The dream within a dream.

You remember when you have the wonderful dream and someone or something woke you up? It sucks right? what’s going to happen in the love story that your dream set you up? what was that one character going to say to you before you woke up?

What if you could go back to sleep and dream about the ending of that story? what if you never woke up? Yes you never woke up, your brain just put you in a dream where you woke up from another dream, how cool is that? not at all? yeah I agree with you.

Oddly enough the Chicken McNugget dream was a dream within a dream, other cases usually involve me waking up but I see myself in third person and I don’t realize I’m in a dream until I wake up for good.

4. Dream’s locations

This one is, rather weird, when I’m sleeping at someone’s house there’s a huge chance that good portion of my dream would take place in that house.

When I was studying, i used to dream a lot about vacations and just simply being outside of school, while when I was on my summer vacation I had dreams that mostly took place in one of the many classrooms I’ve studied over the years.

Sometimes my dream can be kinda like the Black Ops III zombie maps Revelations, because there are so many unrelated locations linked together by a strange reason.

5. Lucid Dreams

Being in control of your dreams is something rather rare, but fun to do once you realize you’re actually dreaming.

I once read that sometimes you’ll look different in your dream so try to look out for a defining feature everytime, usually for me it works the best when I look at my hand, in real life i have scars in both of them, so often when I’m dreaming, there will be no scars.

But even though I’m in control sometimes things aren’t as awesome as they can be, no no no, sometimes instead of just ending my suffering from a nightmare I try to defeat whatever haunts it with my new found powers, sometimes you’ll defeat it, other times you won’t be able to scratch it because the creature is too powerful.

I remember one time being “stucked” on a lucid dream, you know you’re there, you’re in a bad situation you try to get out and nothing works, you try to get an escape to a better realm in your subconscious world, try to get a weapon to defeat what torments, but whatever you do nothing works.

Kinda odd that most of my lucid dreams are nightmares, but at least is nice to take control of it every now and agaim and save yourself from trouble.

In conclusion:

Our brains can be pretty fucked up when it comes to dreams, they can give us something fun, something sexy, something messed up, something completely nonsensical, these things being based on the things you love, the things you fear and the things your brain said it should happen like:

“Wouldn’t it be funny if you were scare you by waking you up in your house but instead of your family you saw people with purple sandwiches for a head? Because that’s what’s going to happen!” Enrico’s brain on what was probably his first nightmare ever.

Most of the dreams and nightmares i mentioned in this post were real, although in real life i wouldn’t be afraid of the source material, they somehow ended up being terrifying when I went to bed…

Sweet dreams!

Random Thoughts #3 Things to come, stars, zombies easter eggs, the blog.

Things to come:

Why are you being so secretive about what’s going to happen?

Trying to build some hype around it, I know to some of you this won’t be so amazing but for me it’ll be the experience of a lifetime, kinda wish it’d last a lifetime but it’ll only last 2 months, I’m excited either way.

One of the confirmations I needed for it arrived, I shall wait until I receive the other ones, but at this point I can guarantee it’ll most likely happen.

To any of my close friends who are reading this, the celebration is still on, what we’ll do is still undecided but I’m sure that your presence will make it amazing!

I grew an obsession of staring at stars, yeah I know this is pretty random, but this is random thoughts, I can say whatever random thing I want, anyway, I think this probably began a few years ago, I live on an apartment complex in the city, so usually when I look up into the sky I don’t see too many stars, only a few if none because it’s so cloudy.

But there’s one place that is 100% guaranteed that there will be a load of stars there, and that’s at the countryside house me and my family visit on occasions, I remember just laying down at the slide and staring into the night sky, you can see the moon, the stars and on sometimes you could even spot falling stars there, I spotted at least two on my stay there but I’d sure love to spot more.

What’s so special about looking at a sky full of stars?

To me the magic is just letting your mind loose, you can just lay down, relax and think about all sorts of things, the future, the past, the present, things that are logical or illogical, the sky is the limit, and you have tons to explore with that amazing view.

Black Ops Zombie’s Easter Eggs

So recently I’ve been playing Black Ops III on the PC, and I have to say, those Easter eggs are hard as hell, it took forever to find some players so I could redo the Shadows of Evil Easter egg, I had to redo it because the summoning never appeared in my menu after the Zetsubou No Shima update, I did both Der Eisendrache and Zetsubou no Shuma Easter egg on solo and I’m having a hard trying to finish Gorod Krovi one, and I’ll probably have the same trouble with Revelations.

So far the only maps I haven’t completed their Easter Egg quest were Ascension, because it’s reward was pointless, Buried, Origins and the previously mentioned Gorod Krovi and Revelations.

Hopefully I can finish them soon, that thing is starting to give me a headache.

My thoughts on the blog

I don’t upload as much as I would like to on the blog, lack of content is not something I was expecting to suffer here, but then again I’m not the most interesting person in the world.

Regardless of the lack of content I must say thanks for everyone that visits the blog, I wasn’t expecting to have visitors from all around the world, I was expecting only my Brazilian friends who speak English to actually read all of this stuff, but no, I had visitors from the United States, from Canada, from Germany, from Romania and from the United Kingdom, so thanks everybody, I appreciate the views and I hope you enjoy the content featured here.

Random Thoughts #2 Voice actors, my first console and the reason I don’t use Facebook as much as I did before

Recognizing Voice Actors.

Really, recognizing voice actors?

Yes, recognizing voice actors, I don’t know why but I find a bit of joy when I can compare character’s voices to later find out that they share the same voice actor. Two examples on this:

On the Adventure Time episode “Everything’s Jake” there are 3 characters that Jake meets throughout the story, Goose, The Mayor and Dr. Erik Adamkinson, that sound pretty similar to Phillip J. Fry, Zapp Brannigan and Professor Farmsworth from Futurama, that’s because they were all voice by the same person, Billy West, which I think is pretty cool considering that Bender and Jake are both voiced by John DiMaggio.

Nolan North and Steve Blum worked together innumerous times, they’ve had very iconic roles over the years and are two of my favorites voice actors, If I had to pick 2 franchises they’ve worked together and their characters in them, I’d pick Call of Duty Zombies’ Dr. Edward Richtofen and Tank Dempsey.

The first video game console I’ve ever owned.

I can’t remember what year I got it as a Christmas gift, but the console I got was a Gemini X Game, a Brazilian Famicom Clone, it looked like a Sony Discman with Sega Genesis/Mega Drive inspired controllers, a Famicom cartridge slot and strangely enough, a light gun that kinda looks like a Walther PPK, James Bond’s weapon of choice.

Little me was too dumb to understand that this console was a clone, but even if I did, I wouldn’t care, It was my first console, I was very excited to play it and I had a lot of fun doing so.

I can’t remember all of the games that were available on the cartridges and the system, so with the help of Google I found out some of the games I’ve played on it: Track & Field, Duck Hunt, F-1 Race, Lunar Pool, Hogan’s Alley, Contra, Jackal, Soccer, Spider-Man Return of the Sinister Six, Battle City.

The reason I’m avoiding Facebook recently.

Brazil is a country that is very divided when it comes to politics, some people lean more to the left while others lean more to the right, that’s natural people do have different opinions on different things, I will respect both sides of the coin regardless.

Talking about politics is important so you can grow up as a person and help the society you live do so as well, as long as your political view isn’t your only personality trait everything should be fine, which leads me to why I’m avoiding Facebook, political posts.

Sharing something on Facebook is kinda like a one way conversation, you just press a button to display something on your timeline and show it to other people in their News Feed, and that’s about it, unless you’re a famous person or a page you won’t get a lot of attention, apply that to politics and things will get a bit annoying.

You’re saying this because you don’t agree with their opinion…

Not really, sometimes I may agree with their point of view, my problem is the fact that Facebook doesn’t have a filter to simply block the kinds of post you don’t want to see on your News Feed , I’d rather just see what my friends are up to instead of blocking every page that posts political content because of something my friends shared.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to “throw shit” on my friends because of their point of view, you can post whatever you want on your timeline, If I don’t want to see certain content is my problem not yours, Facebook could at least help it’s users to block specific subjects they would rather not see, if you’re somehow insulted because of this post I’m sorry.

Anyway that wraps things up for today, I’ve made a possible thumbnail for future Random Thoughts, it’s probably not the final version though.

The reasons why I decided to play on the PC

Oh so he’s one of those “PC MASTER RACE” douchebags…

No, I do play on PC but that doesn’t mean I have a superiority complex like some other members of the PC gaming community…

Alright, your opinion will be heard, what’s your reason for playing on the computer?

Well, so far I’ve only played games on a Vostro 5470, it may not be a power house, but this baby used to pack quite a punch, It ran some modern games such as Grand Theft Auto V, Dead Rising 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops III on very minimum specs compered to the actual minimum recommended, It never looked that good but it ran quite fine, for a while, after some time they couldn’t run as fine, Grand Theft Auto V for example had problems loading the map, every time you accelerated a Super car to a certain speed, the road simply disappeared followed with some frame drops.

Sadly for me I’ll still be hanging to it, so I won’t be able to play games I’ve been really looking forward to play such as Fallout 4, Doom (2016) , Resident Evil 7, NieR: Automata, Black Ops III’s DLC: Zombie Chronicles, among other games; the reason for that being that it costs a small fortune here in Brazil to built a decent gaming computer.

Ok, that’s a decent story related to your hardware, but what’s the reason you play it on a PC?

Well there are only three reasons and they are:

1. Steam

Ah Steam, you’re a the most lovable and yet most cruelest of mistresses when it comes to PC gaming,

Why is it lovely? Well Steam is a wonderful service to use, it’s simple it has all sorts of games available for purchase, a lovely interface to find new games based on your and your friend’s interests, you can interact with the community to find guides, strategies, controller configurations among other features.

Why is it cruel? 1 word dear reader: SALES, so many sales, the prices are amazingly low, it’s so good, they occur so often you just can’t help yourself and buy a game or two or a bundle with a couple of games for a very low price, if you don’t have enough self control they are quite a temptation.

 2. Controller Support

Just because you play on the computer it doesn’t mean that you’ll be stuck playing with the keyboard and mouse, there are so many alternatives , the most common controllers used is the Xbox 360 one, but you can play with so many others, you can play with a PS3 one, a PS4 one and if you’re crazy enough, you can even get things like a Guitar Hero controller, a third party retro controller such as an Atari one, hell, you can even use bananas wired to a circuit board as a controller, every mercenary has his own tool for the job, and being able to pick the one you prefer for it is always nice.

3. No subscription required to play online

The current line of console all have their own subscription based program that will allow players to play the games they own online, them being the Xbox Live, PlayStation Plus and pretty soon the Nintendo Switch Online Service, once a month you’ll be able to get a free game from them and whatever other bonus they offer, PC on the other hand ,besides subscription based games, you won’t need to pay an extra to be able to play online with your friends, which in my opinion is how it should be, I had both the Wii and the PS3 and you didn’t needed to pay extra to pay online, so my best alternative was really to move on to computer gaming.

Do I hate console gaming? Absolutely not, they’ve played a huge role on my gaming experience over the years, and in fact they still play a part of it in the present, whenever I go to my friends or family’s house, we usually sit down and enjoy playing on the PS4, we have tons of fun doing so, I even own a PS4 controller, even though I don’t own a console, I use it to play games on both the computer and on the PS4 with them.

So whatever your gaming platform of choice is, game on and remember to respect your fellow gamers!

My opinion on Soccer/Football

He’s a Brazilian of course he likes soccer/football!

Actually, no, I don’t like soccer/football at all…

Still bitter about the World Cup?

I’ve never been, most other Brazilians were pretty upset about it, I laughed so much that day, I was playing Black Ops II while my family was busy watching the match at the living room, even while wearing headphones and with the door closed you could still hear the game and people screaming at the window, I remember I lost it when I heard someone yelling “BAD TEAM” of course it was in Portuguese.

Ok so when exactly did you started disliking the sport?

To be honest, I don’t have a specific date to mark on the calendar, I remember having to play it so many times over the years just to complete a team, and suck at it, while everyone else was having fun or taking it more to a competitive side, I was rather bored.
Soccer/football is something unavoidable here, everywhere you go you’ll hear people talking about last night’s game, how amazing that one player is, how superior [Insert team name here] is and how awful [Insert team name here] is, and so on.

I live on an apartment complex, so wanting it or not you’ll know when someone scores on the game, the reason being the noise, you’ll hear people screaming “GO [Insert team name here]” SUCK IT [Insert team name here]”, using air horns, vuvuzelas, cars horns and whatever they can use. While I’m not sure everywhere in the country is like this, I wouldn’t doubt it considering how big of a thing it is around here.

Video game wise, I’m not sure why FIFA and PES are still being released yearly, the only difference between them and their previous version is a bit of a graphical difference, some changes regarding to the team and occasionally a new feature, this argument can be made about any yearly released game like Call of Duty or sports games.

I’ve went to a stadium at least twice in my life, one of them was to watch a match with my cousins, and the other one was to watch a Foo Fighters concert with them,
Can you guess which one I had more fun going to?
If you guessed watching the game you clearly haven’t been reading this in the right order.
I’m not gonna lie, I’ve fun watching the game with them, not because of the actual game, but to the company I was with,  I cheered with them, it’d feel awkward being the only one not to, plus I wanted to make them happy knowing that I was having a good time with them, In the end the team they were rooting for won, hooray, at the end of the night we went to a burger joint to eat something, whether it was a celebratory thing or because we were really hungry, we may never know, or care in fact, on that day I’ve discovered that even if you’re doing something that you’d consider boring, the right company can make that experience really enjoyable.

Is there anything wrong with liking the soccer/football? absolutely not, you can enjoy playing it or watching a match as much as you want, if you’re having fun doing so that’s all the matters, just because we’re into different things that doesn’t mean I won’t respect you as a person.
There’s still one question that bothers me to this day, If I don’t like soccer/football as a sport or as a video game, why the hell do I enjoy Rocket League so much?
